SSTUWA Executive: Ruth Kane
RuthKaneI am passionate about Public Education in this state.  I am also very passionate about teaching in the Country.  All of my teaching in this fabulous state has been in the Country and previously in Queensland.  Having the privilege of standing for election with the Members’ First Team in the forthcoming election will ensure that country voices are heard and listened to.  I am very keen to continue to improve the conditions for educators who choose to live and work in country locations.  Making significant improvements to the Country Teaching Program for the next General Agreement Negotiations is a top priority for my role with the Members’ First Executive Team.

I am currently a Teaching Administrator, Head of the T&E Learning Area at the Local High School in Kalgoorlie- Boulder.  My area of expertise is in Home Economics.  I have been an active member of the SSTUWA for all of my teaching career, taking on many roles.  I have been a Union Representative, Deputy Representative, Treasurer, Secretary, Women’s Contact Officer, District Council Delegate, State Council Delegate, an observer at the AEU Federal Conference and most recently (2008) a delegate to the AEU Federal Women’s Conference.

Representing Members interests has been an integral part of my enthusiasm for working with the current Members’ First Executive, during 2008 and 2009.  It has been a rewarding experience to be part of the team who won significant increases for members rights and conditions in the latest General Agreement.  This was not achieved without leadership and commitment from the team that won the continued fight for its members, this must be acknowledged and the Members First 2008-2009 Executive must be thanked.

Our Union must have effective leadership who are able to make clear directions, plan strategically and meet the demands of the fast changing world we live in.  Leadership of the union must represent its members.  A vote for Members First will ensure that decision making processes are consultative and representative of branches around this state.  The Members First team are a group of members and colleagues committed to open and healthy debate on any issue of interest to members.  Our Union must continue to rise to the challenge of raising the status of our profession, both within our own educational community and that of the wider community.

Behaviour Management of students across the membership is something of real concern.  Members First are committed to ensuring that this be of significant importance in the next round of negotiations.  I am committed to seeing that members concerns and issues are addressed during executive’s next term of office.  The Government must engage with our SSTU leadership and membership to listen to what educators and the community are saying in relation to student behaviour management and make way for changes in this area.  We must ensure that Happy Classrooms = Happy Conditions = Happy Teachers.

Continue the wins for our RIGHTS AND CONDITIONS by voting for the Members First Executive Team, over one hundred years of unionism is worth continuing the campaign for.
